Album Spotlight - Ready Take One

Wednesday, January 25, 2017

This month's Album Spotlight focuses on another gem from 2016, the follow-up to the belated Complete Concert by the Sea, Erroll Garner's Ready Take One. A continuation of the ongoing archival efforts taking place on Garner's unearthed recordings, Ready Take One is a compilation of unreleased studio takes, including never before heard Garner originals. Among the new originals are the up-tempo "Chase Me" and the gorgeous ballad "Back to You". Staples such as Garner's signature tune "Misty" as well as a cover of the Tizol-Ellington "Caravan" (a highlight of Concert by the Sea) also make appearances. "Ready Take One" is a phrase that was often spoken by Garner's producer and business partner, Martha Glaser, from the control room. Her niece, Susan Rosenberg, started the "Erroll Garner Jazz Project" along with a professional archivist, who have been examining the thousands of tape reels of recordings that Garner had stowed away. Ready Take One is the first by-product of their efforts, and it was worth the wait.
